    Association

The Action Group of Bobenthal - St. Germanshof e.V.

Since its foundation in 2003, the Action Group has aimed to serve the well-being of the Bobenthal village community. All efforts had the goal to promote the village in its shaping and to make it more enjoyable for everyone. Since 2016 the association has focused on the European project. The interest in the activities of the association, in particular with the documentation of the revolutionary events of 1950 in St. Germanshof, the monument to the European Union and its commitment to the dialogue of young people in Europe, has induced a whole series of personalities to join the association.

    Our activities

    European Monument at St. Germanshof

The memorial marks the historic event of the student demonstration in 1950. On the initiative of the contemporary witness Dr. Herbert L. Breiner and the Action Group Bobenthal-St. Germanshof e.V. it was erected in 2007 across the former toll house at St. Germanshof. Based on the twelve stars of the European flag, the monument consists of twelve steles, which are adapted to the average height of a European. Today this meeting place is called "Place de la marche vers l'Europe".

Our Goals: What we do, where we want to be

In the context of growing discrepancies between the countries of Eastern and Western Europe and in the time of the brexit it is important to promote the dialogue of the European youth. The purpose of the Action Group is to further develop the former border station St. Germanshof / Weiler into a European memorial and meeting place. The culture of positive remembrance, learning from the past and responsibility for the common future will deepen the European awareness.

    Educational work

On August the 6th 1950 young people from many European countries succeeded for the first time in symbolically tearing down customs barriers and demonstrating ceremoniously for a federal Europe without internal borders. There is thus a strong connection both to the Hambach Festival and to the Schengen Agreement. The demands of the "border stormers" from St. Germanshof for a federal united Europe with an electoral government and parliament are still relevant today.

If in the future many young people experience "pure European history" at this symbolic place in order to be able to shape their future, it is to be hoped that the people in Europe will understand themselves more as European citizens.

    Initiating debates on tomorrow's Europe

Head shaking over EU regulations, bureaucracy, waste of money, slowness and controversy... Europe is more than that. And - as historical events show - Europe has achieved more than even brave visionaries dreamed. But Europe needs more positive places, places that inspire courage. They exist. They are on our doorstep.

Professional politicians express their visions of and for Europe. Good.
But what do the citizens want, what do young people want?
How far do these wishes diverge?
Which visions does today's youth have of the future Europe?
What should the Europe look like in which we will live one day?
